HUD Research

To start my HUD, I looked at the speedometer of the car I modeled. My car and the speedometer are a bit far apart since I did and old car and my level is Sci-fi...

So I pulled up a few HUDs from my childhood :]

I thought I wanted to do something like Mario Kart... but its a bit boring...

Kingdom Hearts is my favorite game... EVER... And I always loved the... menu bars? They are custom to every world and show quirky things about the world... I kind of want to do this with mine (thats initially why I looked at Mario Kart)

To contrast this, I found some sleeker sci-fi designs... I light blend the two...

Now I just gotta test it out to see how the design looks in my level. It might be a bit to cheerful looking...

Video Link

I just made a quick video to see what it looked like in game...

Doing the Steam Tutorial (Notes so I remeber what I did and what I need help on...)

1] I'm deviating away from the tutorial and making my texture 1024 by 1024 due to the size of my level. I have been having a hard time with pixilation due to the size of my level...

Even though the guys is doing puffs, I decided to do wisps... let see how this goes...

I want the steam to disappear smoothly, and from what I understand I think you do this with the color over life: Alpha over life box. So I did a smooth incline and decline in hopes to get what I want.

The tutorial didn't do the Color over Life, and I felt it needed it, so I changed the color over life to have a smooth gradient, with a more sudden drop off at the end. My lowest value is .05 and it has a cool ghosting effect...

I then went back and fixed a few numbers, like the spawn speed, amount, and duration.

I also fixed my textures

So the steam is too white, to opaque, and needs more columns...and it's to tall

Changes:

I brought Lifetime down from
Min:3
Max:5

to:

Min:1
Max:3

I reduced the start velocity to half of what it was...

I also reduced the spawn from 10 to 7.5

All of the changes look bad in the editor in my opinion, but good in my level...

Steam

I found a tutorial for Smoke/Steam. I'm going to use this to put over my lava. I'm going to do it before attempting the lava splash even though that is way cooler... I just need a step in between the beam and the splash, which I figured was steam.

The link provided above is part one of a three part tutorial.
